The Importance Of Stories About Overcoming Cancer

By John McDonald

We all hope that cancer never strikes us. However, every year millions of people confront this in one way or another. The internet has become a community bulletin board for those who need help to get through it. Online stories about overcoming cancer can be informative and comforting. Posted resources may help people find local support, but many also find the virtual experience valuable.

Cancers are serious, and not everyone survives. Many powerful testimonies tell of people who faced fear, pain, sorrow, and death in ways that no one who knew them will forget. The end of their lives might have been premature, but the impact of their character will endure. Stories about them have become national bestsellers and hit movies. Many foundations have been started in memory of loved ones whose family and friends want their lives to be remembered.

Of course, we all love tales of complete recovery. There are many of these in which medical treatments work perfectly. There are also healing episodes that doctors and nurses can't explain. Since the will to live can make a difference in how a person handles treatment and the resumption of normal life, inspiring stories are worth every word.

The power of prayer should never be underestimated. The Bible, which is full of miraculous healing, instructs people in how to pray: with the laying on of hands, without ceasing, with confidence in being heard by a loving father, with joy and praise. Things like joy, confidence, and persistence may be hard in hard times, but that is part of the help one can give to another. Think of it like planting seeds in the garden of God and anticipate the beautiful flowers you will enjoy in time.

Television evangelists pray for the sick and receive word of miraculous healing, which listeners are invited to claim for themselves and others. Books have been written by skeptical journalists who investigated claims of divine healing and were forced to report them valid. People who have others praying for them often report better reactions to chemotherapy, less pain and fear, and faster recovery than was predicted for them.

Survivors and those who have lost a loved one join in walks to raise awareness and money for research for a final cure for cancer. Thousands support this effort by participating or sponsoring someone who will walk, by wearing pink, by donating to the cause, and by putting pink bows on their cars. Magazines and online posts offer healthy lifestyle tips and recipes. There are support groups for caregivers and those who are grieving.

Many stories can be found on the sites of treatment centers. These are like customer reviews and can be informative and helpful. There are many decisions to be made and people should do research before making them. It's also helpful to know what happens during treatment and therapy. Families and caregivers can feel better equipped if they know what to expect.

Hearing the accounts of those who have traveled this difficult path and seen the positives in the situation is truly valuable. People fear the unknown most of all, but these are no longer uncharted waters.
