Why Surreal Comedies Are Popular With Audiences

By Brenda Snyder

The absurd is always close to us, more than we know or think about or realize. For movie directors and film companies there is much cachet to creating films that depict surrealist elements that are also realistic enough. There have been many of these, done by the most acclaimed directors and also with good box office performances.

Surrealism is not only a novel and excellent element here, art, theater and literature have also accessed it. Movements for it were created, and the demand for surreal comedies became fashionable, much more focused than today, but today audiences accept it. It means it is already accepted as an important element for many people.

Surrealism was once connected to Dadaism, which really mixed the most disparate and surprising elements into unnatural poses. Surrealistic scenes however belong to the subconscious, to the life of dreams. And artists know these scenes to have enough truth and basis on everyday life to be subjects of good works.

Many times, this comedy type was able to create waves along genres of many kinds. In Hollywood, the primary gamble is in creating good films that will also be successful in box office terms. Scorsese, among others, makes it a point to occasionally come up with absurdist features that also do good financially.

So today the people who watch movies will not really have to say what is surreal or what is not. This is because the element is already a casual thing for audiences, and suspension of disbelief is very much the practice for these nowadays. So many surreal things have passed their eyes, made believable through technical means, and there are really surreal movies that are not even labeled so.

In technical terms, most everything is possible in movies now, and the people involved really put this to good use. Their advantage is that many of the techniques used were developed precisely for movies. And while tech does not make surrealist elements, the story or plot or them will create them as the feature goes.

Writers and artists may know how to use it, and they can be developed for stage or screen. There are plays in which situations are really surreal but not out of this world, and in fact are very much rooted on physical realities. This is one thing that can distinguish the best kinds of comedies for this specific genre.

A production for a film might not even be too reliant on tech. But even so some basic effects can be applied anywhere or everywhere. The better quality works may even be told in a straightforward way, using some basic equipment used in most features, so that the surrealistic elements may be pronounced or delineated by the director who manipulates these elements in the work.

There are lists of works with absurdist humor as the central thematic element. The reviews vary from those that are B grade to those that have been accepted in the mainstream. There is a range that is relevant here, which can start from mild to extreme, and any one film can go to both if the story is workable enough.
