For upwards of ninety percent of its time, human society was nomadic. During this phase as nomads, they went about the world hunting and gathering, doing everything in their power to keep on surviving. Eventually however, like any good bachelor, human society settled down. But that would not have happened if the person in charge of the first tribe to do it did not see the merits of settling. But because they did, that set off a series of events that would lead to the modern world. Now, the importance of good leadership has not diminished. Human society is made up of people. Those people generally have friends and family. It is these social circles which form the basis of human society. Were it not for this social mentality, there would not any kind of functioning community. People would just be too busy trying to one up each other to actually get anything done.

A leader is supposed to be the one to make the best decision possible for everyone.
Democracy is when a leader is chosen from the populace. In the olden days, the people in charge would not be chosen. No, they would either come in with an army and then take over, or they would have been the descendants of those who took over, becoming leaders because of some sort of divine right to rule or something. But not in a democracy, in such a system, can anyone who meets certain qualifications can ascend into an office provided they get enough popular support from the citizenry.
Voter need to register. This is to identify themselves as such. Without this registration, a person will generally not be allowed to vote.
A candidate is a human being. This makes them just as susceptible to all the follies of man as anyone else. Most candidates will put on a well pressed suit, fix their hair, and put on some makeup in order to appear perfect. But that fact of the matter is that they are anything but. They are people, and as such, they are imperfect.
The issues will generally be an important factor in any election. As such, it is vital that the people who will vote in it have at least some knowledge about those issues. This can be done by reading valid, trustworthy sources. Being aware of the intricacies of the issues makes a person better suited to making choices.
But no matter how much a person knows, it is not going to be enough if they do not show up to vote. Yes, waiting in those long lines sucks. But it sucks even more to have an elected official who is completely unfit for the job.
