Since the beginning of time and since after that, people have lived to compete and survive while competing which each other to get what they want. Every animal in this world competes every day to get food and live another day once again. This is how the cycle of life works.

The test and challenges would be done in order to prove that these men could work well together and had good potential as an army that could defend the state.
The way ancients practiced events is a little different from how they are done now. Most athletes were the best hunters and warriors of a tribe of people. Each event would be done to find out who was the strongest and more superior of them all. In Greece may sporting events were held for this purpose.
The Greeks had managed to give the world a very important gift. This gift came in the form of a sporting event known today as Olympics. These games were held every year and different representatives from a city state would come to prove the dominance they have over the others and rivals. The original purpose of Olympics was done as a tribute to Zeus.
When the Romans took over the Greeks, these games were ceased but the Romans, people that had admired the culture of Greeks greatly, adapted entertainment and contest of their own. Theirs was much more different and more violent as a whole. The coliseum was made for these purposes and the events were famously held there.

Various medicine and treatments are given to injured players so that they heal much faster rate then what was a devastating injury a decade before. The advance in conditioning had also given many sportsmen an advantage in training equipment and methods.
But there is one thing that people so much about the idea of college sport. That is when certain athletes are given free rides to major schools in exchange for playing with the team the school has. This has given many young men and women an opportunity for greatness.
