Raising responsible children is one of the main purposes in a parent's life. There are many ups and downs in doing this. At some point in time, the child will leave home and begin their own, productive life. This leads to the problems faced by empty nesters, one of which is the sadness and dread of facing this. Though it should be joyful, it is not always for some parents.
Parents can take pride in a child who is responsible and getting out on their own, to start their lives with the skills they have learned from their parents. Instead of being proud of the skills their children have learned, though, they are often sad to see their child leave. They need to understand that their child is going to benefit from what they have taught them.
These feelings of sadness are quite normal, and should be faced instead of denied. Though you experience happiness for your child, you may still feel some sadness. Admit that and seek professional if the feelings seem overwhelming and hard to handle.
One key to coping with the sadness is to think about things you enjoyed before you had children. Many of these have been forgotten about in the effort of raising your family. If they are still of interest to you, go back and enjoy them again. Or, at least find something that will be enjoyable to you.
You can not pursue new things that are fun for you, and maybe a little on the dangerous side. It may be you always wanted to skydive or zip line. Now you can. You can start a new hobby. You are no longer responsible for a small child, so can do those things. Seek them out and do them with not guilt.
You may have had to let your career go on hold to meet family obligations when you had children. You can now put your career first. You can travel for work, if that is something you would like to do. You can even take the chance now to start a new career, as there is less family responsibility if it doesn't work out, or if the income is lower.
Travel plans can now be made. You can travel across the country if you wish, or even travel outside the country if you want. RV living is very popular and is now possible for you as well. If you are retired, you have no time or career restraints. Take you identification with you and enjoy many senior discounts and special programs. You are free to roam, now. Take advantage of that freedom.
Downsizing is not a possibility for you, since you have no children living at home anymore. You can live in a beach house or condo, either in a luxurious one or a small one that is cheaper to save expenses. If you want to live on the beach, or in the mountains, you are free to do so. You no longer need as large a house, so can go for a smaller one that is more luxurious, maybe something you have always wanted.
