What Does The Maryland Libertarian Party Believe In?

By Carolyn Wagner

There is so much political division in the United States today that many citizens aren't behaving rationally. The level of discourse is poor, and the negativity is rampant. At such a pivotal point, the majority of Americans may agree on only one thing. Congress is dysfunctional. They blame both Republicans and Democrats. The Maryland Libertarian Party, is one group that hopes the division will convince independents to take a serious look at its platform.

Most Americans are fuzzy on just what Libertarians believe in and who exactly they are. People who think they have an idea about the group's platform often don't even come close. The foundation of Libertarianism is individual freedom. They are in favor of limited government. Libertarians don't want any party intruding in their personal or business lives.

Libertarians don't want Republicans making personal or moral choices for them. They don't want Democrats deciding how to spend their money. The group believes in free trade and the legalization of drugs. They want to abolish gun control laws. Libertarians don't believe in campaign finance reform.

The group is liberal on social issues. They are believers in personal choice. They don't want the federal government to intervene in the decisions they make when it comes to marriage or the formalization of personal relationships. Libertarians consider drug possession and drug use to be victimless crimes that don't need to be prosecuted. They believe the death penalty is problematic and needs to be stopped for the foreseeable future.

On economic issues Libertarians are conservatives. They are against regulations and believe businesses have the right to compete with each other freely. They are in favor of eliminating the IRS, income taxes, and Social Security. Libertarians hold the position that individuals who are pressured in a free market society will contribute to charities that will, in turn, will meet the needs of the underprivileged, eliminating government bailouts.

The group has gone back and forth on the subject of abortion. A few years ago, the platform was pro-abortion declaring that the government had no right to interfere with an individual's personal decision in this matter. Recently it has taken a more centrist stance. One proposed platform states that taxpayers should not bear the expense of an individual's personal decisions. The group has proposed the elimination of regulations restricting access to over-the-counter contraceptives.

When it comes to foreign affairs the party is isolationist. The group believes the United States military should exist only as a national defense mechanism. Libertarians do not believe the armed forces should be deployed outside the United States for any reason. Their reasoning is that this country should not be in the business of policing other nations.

Libertarians do not believe in handing out foreign aid. The group would get rid of every security clearance that prohibits access to information they think private citizens have rights to. The Libertarian Party is economically conservative, non-interventionist, and socially liberal in its views with an emphasis on individual freedom and limited government.
