How To Use Self Improvement And Self Help Workbooks

By Sarah Peterson

While there are a number of treatment options when it comes to alcoholism, anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress order, most are extremely expensive. For those who can not afford these treatments, Self Help workbooks such as the Artist Way and others can often be of assistance to these and others suffering from similar conditions.

In most cases, these books focus on a specific problem area or overall health and well being. Upon perusing a number of these books, individuals can often decide which books or workbooks might be best for current needs. Once having done so, the books can often be found online as e-books, at libraries or in bookstores.

The category comes from the title of a book by Samuel Smiles which was published in 1859. In that day, the books were more about improving all aspects of the self rather than being focused on a particular area. Whereas, later after having become quite popular in the twentieth century, the category and subtexts were changed to reflect public interest.

At the onset of the movement, books, brochures and guidebooks were often offered free of charge to those having issues with anxiety, depression or behavior. For example, "Codes Of Conduct, " out of Egypt is a good example of this type booklet. Whereas, in other parts of the world, the Bible has often been long thought the first in a long line of books related to self improvement.

After a descent into darkness and despair during the depression and World War II, the books became quite popular with people looking for a way back to the light. As such, the books went through somewhat of a renaissance in the mid-50s to late 1970s. The books became quite popular during the pop-culture movement of the 1970s. After which, many psychology professors began using various titles as required texts for a number of classes in psychology and human development.

More recent books such as How To Win Friends And Influence People and I'm Okay You're Okay are often considered part of the post-modern phenomenon. While some acknowledge the self-education and improvement which can result from reading these books, others believe the works could be dangerous to the psyche of those whom read them.

Over the years, it has become clear that these books have played a vital role in developing social constructs and overcoming shyness. In addition, there are many which have assisted individuals with a number of other issues from overcoming alcoholism and anxiety to quitting smoking. Whatever the challenge, habit or obstacle, it is more likely an individual is going to be successful by reading the entire text and working through any and all assignments as instructed.

Ultimately, the books which have workbooks or chapters with assignments are often the most beneficial. A good example of this is the Artist Way, in which readers are asked to take oneself on an artist date once a week, once a month or how ever often an individual can afford to do so. In doing so, the individual gets out of the house and is provided the ability to socialize, even if it is only with a bartender, concession stand host, ticket-taker at the movies or restaurant staff. After which, the individual becomes stronger when it comes to being placed in social situations.
