How Gigi Love Got Her Start

By Melissa Scott

This is a performing artist who is the original Trails & Rails Troubadour. Trails & Rails is a program that has been organized by both the National Park Service and Amtrak as a way of getting people to enjoy the natural wonders of national parks all from the comfort of an Amtrak train. As a part of this program, Gigi Love performs both on these long train rides and at breathtaking performance sites in many parks across the country.

By taking the time to visit the many wonderful natural sites at the many national parks across the country, Love's music perfectly reflects the things that people can see, feel, and experience in these places. From 2015 to 2017, she spent two years going around to nearly two dozen national parks to absorb everything she could from the places. She took many notes along the way, and what came from these notes are many of the songs that can be found in her album celebrating the centennial of national parks.

People who listen to her songs say that they feel transported to a different place. Because her lyrics are often depicting the many travels she has gone on, the songs themselves often feel like a journey. In her music, Gigi has a way of making the listener see what she sees and go with her on this journey.

Dallas is the place where many great musicians got their start, and it is the place where Gigi was born and grew up. When she was seven, she knew she wanted to sing and play guitar, and got right to playing and practice as much as she could. By the time she was twelve, she was already performing at some big-name place.

A lot of people have heard her name before because of the widespread public exposure she attained after performing at some very big events for extremely large audiences. One of her big breakthrough events was opening for the Dave Matthews Band at the Columbia River Gorge. Her performance at the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Closing Ceremonies led to many opportunities in her career.

Love's association with the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance has included the Suzi Wollenberg Folk DJ Showcase in 2016 as well as touring with Kate McLeod. She has also toured with Duncan Phillips, who is Utah Phillips' son, in a Utah Phillips tribute band called Burns on the Plush. Love's performance on these songs gives a whole new life to these classics.

Beautiful national parks is what inspired Love's album celebrating the centennial. She saw the importance and wonder of these places, and wanted to use the power of song to help people become more aware of it. The songs she writes are carefully crafted to reflect the uniqueness of each place, so when one actually does visit there, the sounds perfectly fit the experience.

The first song that Gigi wrote about a national park was called Yosemite Gold, and there seemed to have been some destiny at play in the incident when she wrote the song. As she tells it, she bought a mandolin for $25 from a rock climber who needed gas money. She then took the instrument to the El Cap meadow and wrote her song.
