The Flag Company Inc And Micronesia Flag

By George Sans

The history of the modern Federated States of Micronesia is one of settlement by Micronesians; colonization by Spain, Germany, and Japan. The Federated States of Micronesia is composed of the island states of Yap, Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Kosrae, all in the Caroline Islands. The islands vary geologically from high mountainous islands to low coral atolls, with volcanic outcroppings on Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Chuuk. They are located 3,200 mi (5,150 km) west-southwest of Hawaii, in the north Pacific Ocean.

Prior to WWII, the Federated States of Micronesia was governed by several world powers, including Portugal, Germany, Spain, and Japan. It was not until the end of the war that power shifted to the United States, which assumed control over the islands. Remains of the wreckage can be seen throughout the region, from ruins of fortifications to numerous sunken ships. In fact, Micronesia is home to the most impressive collection of warships in the entire world.

The year 1947 saw the birth of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was entirely administered by the United States. The first sign of movement towards Micronesian autonomy came with the establishment of the Micronesian Congress in 1964. Lack of development and control of the economic planning for the region led members to push for self-government.

The flag of Micronesia consists of a light blue base with four white, five-pointed stars situated in the middle. The stars are arranged in a diamond shaped formation. The blue base symbolizes the Pacific Ocean and the stars represent the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia.

Based on the design and symbolism of the flag formerly used by the Trust Territory, this flag presented four five-pointed white stars for the four districts (states), centered on a blue field for the Pacific Ocean. One ray of each star pointed away from the center of the flag as if arranged on an imaginary ring.

Originally, the flag of Micronesia was carrying six stars, but after the departure of the Marshall Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands from the Federation two stars were removed. Flags of similar character are typical of a number of states in Oceania. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Micronesia Flag for the future.
