The Battle Of Marathon As A Great Part Of Greek History

By Helen Murray

When the first Persian invasion of Greece happened, marathon then took its place. This was fought between individuals from Athens and rightly helped out by Plataea and the force from Persia which is commanded by Artaphernes and Datis. The combat was the peak of the first attempt taken up by Persia under King Darius I.

Persian invasion speaks about a lot with the battle. What they have done have certainly brought up people to face the great Battle of Marathon because of how war is immensely coincided within that time. Right on the Ionian revolt which was greatly defeated by the Persian, victory has then taken over and Darius ordered to conquer Greece. He assigned his army together with leaders Datis and Artaphernes to go right across the Aegean so to defeat the Cyclades.

The combat rightly happened when the Persians sailed down towards the coastline of Attica which made them land on the bay of Marathon. When the Persians arrive, the Athenian army right then marched quickly so to block the two exits. They need to do it so to avoid the Persian troops from moving inside the island.

With the absence of the Spartans, an eternal gratefulness was given by the army of Plataea. With how the flanks of the Athenians were protected by trees, every day surely made the Spartans closer yet they can never wait for a long time especially when Persians want to attack right away. At such time, Miltiades was so eager to attack the group from Persia despite of knowing that the Spartans are approaching to help the Athenians. Still, he chooses to wait for the actual attack day.

The combat still happened. These men are still asking on why it happened even when the Spartans have not yet arrived. It is actually believed, more when Herodotus explained, that those Greeks took in the attack first but there is no distinct evidence or explanation on why they did it before the arrival of the Spartan army.

For the first theory, it was stated that the Persian army left the Marathon without a specific reason and the Greeks took it as an advantage which steered to the attack. There are still many great variations settled within this specific theory but it was still known that the cavalry was reembarked on their ships and was then sent to the sea so to attack the Athenians.

As for the second concept, it speaks simply of how the Persians attack the Athenians because they finally move their way first. Right when the Athenian troop saw the Persians advancing, they then took tactical actions and surely attacked them right in. Though both theories are not established if they are all exact yet it is noticed that the combat happened because of some kind of Persian activity which definitely triggered the war.

Herodotus believed that those Persians definitely obtain a large infantry while he cannot provide the exact figure held by the Athenian force. Yet as for Cornelius Nepos, he estimated that the Persians acquire 10,000 cavalry and 200,000 infantry whereas, the Athenians only obtain 9,000 of men and the Plataeans have only a thousand of them.

Though the Greek only obtains a few men yet they still own the combat. It is believed that even if they have used superior tactics and equipment, they are still ordinary and amateur soldiers who acquire the deepest courage within.
