Leftist Refusal To Welcome Trump Supporters

By Ruth Phillips

During the 2016 presidential campaign, many people who had always displayed a bumper sticker supporting their candidate were hesitant to do so. Trump's candidacy infuriated people so much that they forgot that this country has a tradition of free speech. In urban areas, many who supported the winning candidate posted no signs on their cars or in their yards. Some who did suffered vandalism and personal attacks. Many progressive or liberal people still refuse to welcome Trump supporters.

This is so un-American that it's amazing to many that it can happen here. Unfortunately, the hostility to the President shows no sign of abating. Those who chant 'Not my president' feel free to show disrespect to the differing views of others. Conservative speakers are denied access to college campuses, hostile comments are posted on social media, and bureaucracies feel empowered to violate constitutionally-granted freedoms of citizens.

The funny thing is that conservatives in this country outnumber progressives (another name for liberals), even though they may feel that they are in the minority. More people want traditional family values protected (even if they support alternative lifestyle choices), basic education brought back to public schools, and honesty and transparency in government. Most people want good jobs, a chance to make their own way in life, and a government that will let them think and choose independently.

There is no doubt that a vocal minority can swing public perceptions. One example of this is the Black Lives Matter movement, which is based on false narratives. Although the Trump administration has done much for blacks - lowest unemployment among blacks on record, black men and women in high positions, genuine aid to poor countries like Haiti - it is constantly accused of racism. Most Americans support traditional marriage, but the same sex marriage movement has tremendous momentum.

Polls which are deliberately slanted to advance the progressive agenda get blazoned on front pages or TV news shows, but Trump's approval numbers continue to rise. However, this doesn't seem to matter to those who have the public forums. The views of college students or those employed in government agencies - hardly impartial by-standers - are accepted as 'mainstream'. It's little wonder that most conservatives limit their political interactions to online comments or phone calls to the White House comment line.

Few people support a curtailment of free speech, for instance, but college students accept censorship of ideas and 'designated zones' for expressing conservative views without a fuss. The teen-age frenzy against guns is not a viewpoint shared by most Americans, although it is a favorite hobbyhorse of liberals (many of whom have armed bodyguards or walled estates). In vain do experts and realists point out that armed guards in schools deter violence and save lives. 'Gun free zones' invite aggression.

Many citizens are aware that a biased media is a threat to freedom. Fake news, sensational coverage of scandals (true or imagined) which replaces more important topics, and hostile debate moderators or political commentators leave people uninformed, misinformed, and confused. The President has proved remarkably able to operate without mainstream press support and still get some of his campaign promises fulfilled.

Fortunately conservatives did vote in the last presidential election. It's vital that they continue to go to the polls every time they have that right and responsibility. Only by electing leaders that share conservative values can the silent majority get things back on track again.
