The Top 4 Profitable Arcade Games, By Robert Jain

By Jason McDonald

Video games make considerable money these days, as Robert Jain and other minds in finance can attest. However, if you were to go back several decades, you would see that the most popular games thrived in arcades. While arcades still exist today to some degree, they were most popular during the 80s and 90s. Many arcade games made money as well, here are the 4 titles that stand head and shoulders above the rest.

NBA Jam - From its quick pace to satisfying throws, NBA Jam is a landmark in sports video games. While it was released on many platforms, home consoles included, its popularity in arcades can't be overlooked. As a matter of fact, it ended up selling 20,000 cabinets, which is the name given to the arcade machines themselves. This is just one of the many financially successful arcade games that names like Bob Jain can draw attention to.

Street Fighter II - While it has numerous versions that are still played today, Street Fighter II remains a landmark in arcade gaming. First, it sold 200,000 cabinets, which makes it arguably the most popular fighting game for those with pockets of quarters. Second, it was one of the first games to use six buttons, which could be used to perform different moves and create various combos. The fact that this game remains a tournament favorite is a testament to its staying power.

Space Invaders - When it comes to classic titles, Space Invaders deserves recognition. Regardless of your age, it's likely that you've played this game before on some platform or another. As far as its impact on arcades is concerned, it sold 360,000 cabinets. Not only does this make it one of the best-selling arcade titles, but one of the most commonly duplicated. There have been many games that were inspired by Space Invaders, which speaks to its legacy.

Pac-Man - This is, without question, the most financially successful arcade game of all time. Pac-Man, as well as its sequel Ms. Pac-Man, ended up moving a total of 525,000 cabinets. When the original Pac-Man came out in 1980, it brought a new style of gameplay that no one saw. Its gradually increasing difficulty and bright colors made it appealing to gamers of all ages. Today, Pac-Man is historic, not only in terms of the game itself but its iconic main character that went on to appear in several games since then.
