How NJ Assembly Election Is Conducted

By Larry Sullivan

The lower house of a state legislature is represented by the general assembly. It contains members who represent all the districts in a given state. The New Jersey general assembly is comprised of eighty legislatures who represent forty districts across the state. Therefore, every district is represented by two members. Elections are conducted after every two years. The following are essential guidelines for NJ assembly election to consider.

Consider how one acquires a partisan candidature. Those who wish to be elected through certain political parties are expected to consider a couple of factors. To start with, the candidate should collect the correct number of signatures from voters who are registered to vote in the district. The candidate is then supposed to sign a certificate that proves acceptance and take an oath of allegiance.

The process of acquiring an independent candidature is known. A candidate who wishes to be elected as an independent member is expected to submit similar paperwork just like the partisan candidate. The number of signatures that are supposed to be one hundred from registered voters in the district that he or she wishes to represent.

What to consider to become a registered candidate. Both partisan and independent candidates are supposed to have similar qualifications to vie for balloting. One must be of age twenty one and a registered United States citizen. The candidate is also expected to have stayed in a district for at least two years to represent it.

How primary elections are done. Primary elections are meant to vote a candidate who represents a certain political party during the legislative elections. Voters who wish to participate should be recognized members of a certain political party. Those who are not affiliated to a specific party should indicate their choice on or prior the fifty-fifth day before the primary elections.

How to become a registered voter. A person who wishes to become a registered voter must have resided in a New Jersey for about thirty days before the voting date. He or she is supposed to be at least eighteen years old to be considered eligible for voting. Registration deadline occurs twenty-one days before the voting is conducted. One can access a registration application from the state website. Submission can be done through mail or in person to the superintendent of election or the county commissioner of registration.

Details about early voting. The state of New Jersey permits voters to conduct early balloting. Such considerations allow voters to cast their votes before election date. Those who wish to follow this process do not have to give any excuse to explain their consideration in a state which allows in-person absentee. One can still vote early in states which restrict absentee voting on condition that there is a valid reason to make this decision.

Absentee voting considerations. Voters that will do an early voting are supposed to file their applications to the election officials. The process is supposed to be done within seven days before the polling period if the applicant wishes to do through email. One is obliged to submit it before 3 P. M one day before polls. Absentee ballot boxes should be submitted to the polling station before the official polling duration is over.
